I'm a Writer! (and spending a lot of time in Foster made this a lot easier for me to say, even though it's as true now as it was when I started the cohorts last year)
I decided to like the post just make sure there is a woman listed there. I see there are plenty of women writers though. Hmmm. Am I am a writer and a people pleaser?
I can add my voice to the chorus, too, but I can't resist adding that to say this with full conviction requires a sense of belonging to the tradition, to the craft. For me, being a Writer is both empowering and humbling, because I think it requires me to pay some attention to what's been written, too.
I’m a writer. Lyle, that first post of yours helped me so much when I was starting out on Substack. The fact that I didn’t need to know what I was writing about, that I didn’t need to have a plan and could just discover it along the way was super liberating. Thanks again for that, buddy🙏🏻
Ah very relatable! Reminds me of an anecdote I recently shared:
Last year, in a fiction class, the teacher asked who wrote full-time. I raised my lil’ Zoom hand: “Writer at a tech company, I write blog articles.” I was swiftly humbled with: “That doesn’t count!” Oof. But it illustrates a truth: a writer in one room can be a non-entity in another. Tech writing ≠ literary fiction. A writer in tech differs from one in media, literature, academia, or journalism. Each field has its own definition of ‘writer’—often exclusive to those already in the room. It’s a reminder that the title writer is as much about context and perception as it is about the act of writing itself.
I'm a Writer
