One of our most Frequently Asked Questions over the past year has been, what *is* Foster?
We’ve made it clear that you can join us for free Writing Circles, but until now, we haven’t been able to say much more about what’s really going on. Just as we as writers evolve over time, so too does the collective! And like many active communities, we tend to spend more time doing our thing (ahem, writing) than telling our story.
All of that changes today, because we have two new things we’re excited to show you.
First, Foster has a new website!
If you’ve ever wondered about who we are, what we do, and who we’d like to join us, this is the place to find out. Here’s a small taste:
Secondly, we made this video to explain Foster in the words of the collective:
There are even more FAQs at the bottom of the site. Here’s our current favorite:
Still reading this and haven’t visited the website or watched the video? Okay, fine, here’s the punchline:
Foster is a community practice
In addition to the Writing Circles we’ve been inviting you into for the past couple of weeks, one of our core rituals at Foster is our monthly recurring Cohorts. Together, weekly Writing Circles and monthly Cohorts make for a simple but powerful communal practice that helps us deepen our writing and produce work that stretches us both as writers and as humans.
Cohorts are explorations of the magic of writing that are somewhere between a course, bootcamp, accelerator, and Hogwarts, and yet not quite any of these things. In each Cohort, writers inhabit a deeply important question, complexity, or muse, and pull on that thread to see what unfolds. As part of Cohorts, writers also have access to workshops, peer support, Office Hours with coaches, and professional editing via the Foster Chrome extension.
Already joined a Foster Writing Circle and ready for the next step? Cohorts offer writers a chance to go deeper into their work and their relationships with each other. Still haven’t tried a free Writing Circle? You know what to do.
Let us know what you think about the site, and any other questions you have in the comments!
I joined my first circle with Minnow last week, and a second circle again today with Dan. Still not sure if I’ll ever publish anything I’m writing. But I’m already starting to have fewer fucks to give about that. Because writing in a way that’s connected WITH others—especially without entertaining the compulsion to do it FOR others—feels so alive!
Love this place! ❤️✍🏻✨
