Over the last few weeks, we’ve gotten a handful of comments along the lines of, “Season 4 sounds cool, but I’m still not sure what it even is lol.” Part of that is that Seasons are a unique experience, and they’re hard to describe. The other part is that this Season is explicitly about being with uncertainty and rejecting easy answers. Regardless, we’re going to attempt being as clear and direct about it as humanly possible. *cracks knuckles*
Season 4: A More Beautiful Question kicks off on Monday, and the deadline to apply is tomorrow, Friday the 13th.
We describe Seasons as a mix between a writing course, summer camp, accelerator, and Hogwarts. Their purpose is to help you feel more vibrantly alive as a writer, then publish something courageous and uniquely your own.
Each Season has a distinct theme, and for this cohort, we’re leaning into Rilke’s powerful notion of “loving the questions that are unsolved in our hearts,” and “living the question now.” Internet culture so often incentivizes us to declare definitive answers with our published work. But this Season, we’ll slow down, inhabit the questions that matter to us without seeking immediate resolution, and use our writing to explore and expand our sense of possibility.
The Season consists of four weeks of guided facilitations, workshops, and peer coaching, through which we will each discover our most resonant questions, and begin using them as creative fuel. When the Season concludes, each of us will hit publish on an artifact from our explorations. Something we're genuinely proud of. Something that can act as a signpost for others who care about the same questions, and who might follow in our footsteps.
The last thing you should know about Seasons is that they’re an initiation into the larger Foster community of practice. This cohort will last a month, but we’re building Foster as an institution that can support writers for years, if not decades, to come. Once the Season ends, you will have access to ongoing co-writing sessions every week, as well as 10,000 words of professional editing, which you can use whenever you want.
Season 4 costs $1,111. There’s a payment plan of $111/month, and we also have limited scholarships available. If you’re interested, you can apply here.
Over the past month, we’ve published a handful of essays around this theme of living our questions. It’s something we’re striving to be in integrity with, both as individual writers and as a larger collective. If you’re still on the fence about Season 4, and want to get a better sense of who we are, these essays should give you a sense of our vibe.
We’re currently co-writing a book in real time, and one of the chapters was going to be an FAQ. But then we realized it’s actually the questions that we haven’t answered, but are actively exploring, that are far more meaningful to share. The questions we’re living point to our deepest values, and our essence, better than anything else we could share. That’s how FUQs (pronounced “fux”) became a core part of our vocabulary. This essay is a short manifesto on why sharing our unanswered questions is more powerful than we realize.
A personal essay from Rob Hardy about the unexpected personal transformation he experienced when fully inhabiting a question about how to change the marketing industry. It’s a beautiful exploration of how living the question can lead us away from disempowering stories about ourselves, and help us actively create new lives we’d never imagine possible.
Another personal essay, this time from Minnow Park, about how the events of 2020 and 2021 began leading him away from his upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian community. For the last few years, Minnow’s been grappling with a question about what it means to be in a healthy relationship to religion, God, and Truth, but it’s been largely private. For him, this essay marked the beginning of a new era of living the question in public, so that he can serve others who feel trapped by the religious stories they were brought up with.
If you’re resonating with this theme of inhabiting your deepest questions, and are ready to do it alongside a supportive community, come join us for Season 4.
